Waiting for people to get ready for a Saturday night of dining and hopefully drinking/dancing in Sorrento after a fabulous day on Capri, once again under immaculate sunshine. The Blue Grotto offers one of the great early stories, more for the sight of capitalism truly at work than the actual site, but the 10 Euro price was easily worth it. The ski-lift type funicular up to the summit really was the highlight, and got me thinking that over the course of the next six months I will have to develop some top 10 lists for the travels, starting with the top 10 sites to have a beer. The cliff at Monte Solarno will be on that list, so 9 left to go. "Let's drink, and think about it," served as the spontaneous toast at the top. Not the most profound or poetic, but it did work for the moment.
Following the summit, spent the rest of the day getting my face well burnt in the sun while hiking to various other scenic points on the island. Those who tell you that Capri is overrated or can be missed are simply wrong. On a sunny day, the isola provides a backdrop that can make any amateur photographer an artist, as the photographs will soon show.
Must be gone. But should note before signing off the two Guinness at the only Irish pub in Sorrento (Chaplin's) where we watched the late English Premiership match upon our return. Caught the second half of one of those magical football games that one team really deserves to win and finally succeeds in scoring at the absolute death. Liverpool's faint hopes still alive, and why not? Sport really is the greatest theatre.
Off we go for wine and supper, then. I will miss this place, and its once-upon-a-time possibilities. But some things are out of our control. Best to keep that focus forward. More from Paris on Tuesday, I think, just before the Camino undertaking (and the realness of this travelogue) truly begins.
