So, after leaving the Internet shop yesterday, I meet up with Nick in the local cafe. In walk some gypsys with bags of what look to be thorny weeds, which Nick excitedly grabs for 3 Euro or so. It turns out that these are wild artichokes (like in this picture, for example), which he gets the guy at the beach canteen to boil for peeling (a hilarious process) and eating. Surprisingly tasty, actually.
"Well, I now have a story next time I find myself eating a pizza with artichokes on it," I say after downing a few. "That's the fun of the trip, my man," says Nick. And isn't it just? Or as Jerome K. Jerome puts the lesson in "Three Men in a Boat": "...we learned experience, and they say that it is always cheap at any price." Perfect. Now off to trade the Ionian for the Aegean, and to see what happens next.
